Mount Ida—send emails today and come tomorrow at noon to the State House

5/15/2018

Dear Colleagues,

Much has occurred around the Mount Ida acquisition.   The UMass Amherst Chancellor, Kumble R. Subbaswamy, informed the legislature that Amherst plans to offer certificate and graduate programs in nursing, business, computer science, and engineering at the Mt Ida Campus of UMass Amherst.  (See his letter here)

Of course, UMass Boston has certificate and graduate programs eight miles away in these areas.  FSU President Marlene Kim informed the Board of Higher Education (BHE) of this and the harm that competition with UMass Amherst will inflict on us at their meeting on May 2.  (See my comments to the BHE here).

► The Senate Oversight Committee hearing on the Mount Ida College acquisition by UMass Amherst will be tomorrow, Wednesday, May 16 from 12 noon to 3 pm at the State House in the Gardner Auditorium.  Speakers are by invitation only.  Please come show our concern about this issue.  You are encouraged to send written testimony to:  Kathleen.oconnorives@masenate.gov

► Because of mounting opposition to his plan, UMass President Meehan has asked the Attorney General to expedite the approval of the Mt. Ida deal. Email the Attorney General with your thoughts at AGO@state.ma.us.
