FSU Executive Committee Meeting Minutes

Executive Committee Members Present: Steve Striffler; Caroline Coscia; Lynne Benson; Dana Commesso; Monique Fuguet; Sana Haroon; Jessica Holden; Travis Johnston; Meghan Kallman; Linda Liu; José Martinez-Reyes; Jeff Melnick; Tim Sieber

  1. Approve Minutes and Agenda: Motion to approve the agenda and the minutes of the April 28 Executive Committee meeting. Motion seconded. Motion passes.
  2. Welcome New Members!

  3. FSU Communication – from Director to Committee: Proposal to share the responsibility of FSU communications. Caroline created proposal for different constituencies to write articles for The Point on various topics, themes, and FSU activities. We will formalize the committee over the summer. Volunteers for committee: Linda, Jeff, Lynne, Jessica.

  4. Lecturer Equity Caucus: Newly formed this semester. Revival of the NTT Caucus which had been inactive for a while. Focus on building solidarity and power for the next round of bargaining for NTTs. There was an end of semester social this week. Asked for funding for food. Would like to be able to use FSU email list to NTTs. We need to account for caucuses in budgeting.

  5. FSU Committees:

    Elections Committee: Lynne, Dana, Travis

    Technology Committee: Travis

    Sick Leave Bank Committee: Natalia Scarpetti

    JCC: Caroline, Jeff, Ellen Frank. We need one additional member. Sana volunteers for JCC.

    FSU Parliamentarian: We need a volunteer.

    Salary Anomaly Committee: We need two volunteers.

    Health and Safety Committee: All-union committee that meets once a month with admin and facilities to iron out health and safety issues on campus. This committee was heavily covid-related and now focuses on ADA compliance, building safety, etc.

    Antiracism Committee: This committee was spearheaded by Tim and Steve has been involved. Are Mickaella Perina and Trei Martin staying on? The committee was born out of the Faculty of Color Letter. We need the committee to evaluate FSU antiracism proposals.

    Motion that Caroline, Sana, Jeff, Ellen are appointed to serve as reps on JCC with MSP. Motion seconded. Motion passes.

    Jeff’s tenured faculty representative position will fill in the fall through a special election.

  6. OER-Low Cost Textbooks: Concern on Ex Comm about disability/accessibility issues for students with special needs, academic freedom for faculty. OER is a major push right now. OER resources are digital in nature and are designed to meet accessibility needs. No CLA members volunteered for this committee. Discussion of OER.

  7. Mt Ida:  Brief update: Caroline is meeting with UMB government relations person (Matthew Fenlon) and Joe Berger about pushing back on Mt Ida.

  8. MTA Conference: Our delegates have a dinner with MSP at the conference. We agreed this year we’d have appetizers with a $500 line item. That event has been cancelled because of covid. Voting for MTA leadership. Three people running for president. Voting for president will be 11:00 on Saturday. Need to pass budget first.

  9. FSU Retreat – Yes? June or late August?: Caroline will email out a poll about preference.

  10. Fall Schedule –  Summer: Probably Friday afternoons, possibly some Wednesday afternoons. Probably after 3:00.

  11. Summer classes: Enrollments for face-to-face classes are so low that some classes will be cancelled. Provost giving flexibility to deans and chairs to switch modality.

  12. Contract: Raises rolled out in next three paychecks – raises first, then back pay, then additional issues. SL3 – identical process as for going up for SL2. Contract is currently operative but contract document is not available yet.
