Solidarity and Support after Yesterday’s Incident

9/12/2025

Dear Faculty and Librarians,

Yesterday’s incident on campus was frightening and disruptive for everyone in our community. Even knowing no evidence of any gunfire, the experience of multiple ominous campus alerts, sheltering-in-place, and worrying about your own safety and that of others can be deeply unsettling. This is especially true given the backdrop of political violence and school shootings we have all been witnessing nationally. We also note with concern that similar incidents occurred yesterday at a number of HBCUs and a few weeks ago at universities around the country, suggesting that what happened here is part of a troubling pattern.

We want to reassure you that you are not alone in this. We have reached out to the administration to participate in a debrief session so we can learn more about what exactly happened, provide your feedback, and work together to improve processes during any future incidents.

As your union, we stand with you and share in the commitment to a safe and supportive campus for all faculty, librarians, staff, and students. Please take care of yourselves and one another in the days ahead, and do not hesitate to reach out if you need support or connection.

In solidarity,
