FSU President Marlene Kim’s remarks to the Board of Trustees, UMass Lowell, September 19, 2018

9/21/18

FSU President Marlene Kim’s remarks to the Board of Trustees, UMass Lowell, September 19, 2018.

I am the President of the Faculty Staff Union at UMass Boston.  I broke my leg this past weekend, so I wasn’t going to address you today.  But I decided to appear because I wanted to tell you that UMass Boston is broken.  We’ve been appearing at Board of Trustees meetings for over two years to tell you that it is broken, but we have received few resources and little help.

Take action against the proposed parking fee increases, other updates

9/17/2018

Dear Colleague,

We hope your semester is going well. As you know, the Executive Committee is committed to working as closely as possible with the other campus unions and Save UMB to roll back the parking fee increase the administration is seeking to impose.  If we are to succeed, we need your support.  A number of activities are happening this week, and in the near future.  Please consider supporting the presence at the Convocation on Thursday and participating in the other opportunities listed below:

Open letter on parking bargaining from FSU member Bonnie Miller

9/14/2018

Dear Faculty,

I attended the FSU meeting today on parking, and the turnout was pretty light. I get it because my schedule is crazy, too, but this parking issue is too important to let our busy schedules get in the way. So in order to make sure everyone is in the loop, I am going to break it down here for everyone.

REMINDER: FSU meeting on parking and parking bargaining: Tomorrow Thursday September 13, 1 pm

9/12/2018

Dear Colleague,

Take a look at the attached parking rates.  Notice that reserved spaces pay the same rates as student day rates in the West Garage.  The percentage of your pay is indicated in red (yes it is regressive).  Don’t like it?  Then come tomorrow Thursday, 1-2PM (Campus Center, 3rd floor, Bay View Room (3540). We will update you and hear your thoughts/get your input on this issue.

Welcome and update from the FSU

9/5/2018

Dear Colleague,

Welcome back to campus for those of you who are returning.  For those of you who are new, welcome to UMass Boston. We wish you a rewarding semester ahead. As you can see, we have been busy:

Get involved with the FSU to stop unilateral rate increase for parking and high parking fees

8/31/2018

Dear Colleague,

The campaign to roll back the high parking fee increase got off to a rousing start on Tuesday when more than 120 people (in summer when most faculty and students aren’t around!) demonstrated at the residence hall ribbon cutting.  We were prevented from entering with our signs, but they certainly knew we were there (see here).

Protest unilateral parking fee increase and high parking fees this Tuesday

8/24/2018

Dear Colleague:

The university has informed us that for the new West Garage, you will have to pay higher ‘interim parking rates’ of $15/day.

We will be filing charges at the Department of Labor Relations to prevent them from imposing these higher rates. We will let you know what happens.

In the meantime, oppose this action and the high parking fees this Tuesday, August 28 at 2 pm with the FSU, other campus unions, and SaveUMB at the
