Dear Colleagues,

After months of delayed negotiations (more on that below), we finally presented all our proposals to the Administration on September 19^th, September 26^th, and October 3^rd.  On October 17^th, Admin responded with brief responses to three proposals and a new proposal of their own. Their stated intention is to give a comprehensive response to all our proposals, though they have already cancelled the scheduled bargaining session where that response was to be given.

Like you, the Point Team is still processing Tuesday’s results. There will be time in the coming weeks and months to reflect on the election’s implications for the labor movement and suggest lessons and paths forward for FSU. For now, the spirit of the voting season has inspired us to introduce you to your FSU Executive Committee—leaders who you elected to serve you.

This week’s Point is written by Alex Mueller, Professor and Graduate Program Director in the Department of English.   The essay below addresses the Administration’s new policy for allocating Graduate Student Assistantships which creates an unnecessary layer of bureaucracy, ignores shared governance, and will be actively harmful to many graduate students and many graduate programs. The accompanying attachment is a “Resolution on Graduate Assistantship Allocation Policies” that will be considered at Faculty Council meeting on November 4^th.
