Nuts & Bolts: Grants Forum, Enrollment Caps, Weingarten Rights, Transportation Proposal

10/30/2023

Dear Members,

Forum Nov 1st 3:00 – 3:50PM: Endowment and Grants Processing.

Do you deal with endowments and grants? Are you paid from these sources? If so, please join us for a discussion related to how these funds are used.   https://umassboston.zoom.us/j/92206301759

AFR: Community Engagement Data Usage

The FSU Executive Committee, at our October 24th meeting, voted to allow CES to pull data from AFRs on community engagement of which the used data is not to include, as much as possible, identifiable markers and that entering community engagement information into an AFR is voluntary and no faculty member shall be harmed for not including community engagement information.   In addition, the FSU is to receive all produced reports, whether created for internal or external use, from the collected data.

Our Contract: Enrollment Caps

With Spring registration upon us, just a reminder that Departments and faculty, not the Administration, set enrollment caps for all courses (see the language in Article 15.4). If student enrollment caps are increased, or if you disagree with the caps, talk to your department, or contact the FSU.

Weingarten Rights

You have the right to have a union witness present for any meeting with your supervisor that is of an investigatory nature or may have disciplinary repercussions.  For more information, see the MTA’s Weingarten: The Right to Representation.

Transportation Bargaining Proposal:  Driving Reduction Initiatives

The Union Coalition has amended our proposal (see attached) to include:

- Bicycle and Scooter Short-term Rental Subsidies: Offer at least a 30% discount on the rental cost.

- Access to shower/change for bicycle: Free access to showers and changing rooms (Beacon and Clark) for bicycle commuters.

-UMB will work with the city of Boston to establish safer bicycle paths to access the campus.

-Carpooling and Van: UMB will provide personal assistance to employees to set up car and van pools. Provide significantly reduced parking rates for car and van pools.  Provide 3-month incentive to switch to car and van pools in the form of gas cards and/or free parking.

- UMB will explore making water taxis available to students and employees to access campus.

- Evening Rates:  The evening rate is valid from 3:30 PM to 6AM.  There is no additional charge to the evening rate for parking during this time period.

The Union Coalition presented these items on Oct 25th when we met with administration.   At that meeting we reiterated that our proposed rates have not changed and that we are including non-parking rate items.  We meet again Nov 20th and expect administration to provide feedback on these items along with our proposed parking rates.
