Forum- Anti-Asian Racism under the Pandemic

3/15/2021

Dear FSU Members,

Register in advance for this meeting (Friday, 8pm):  https://aft.zoom.us/meeting/register/tJwvf-iorz0rE9QkXoYZmEaTH89yFlLZfwdi

The FSU has been generously invited by the International Committee of the Professional Staff Congress -- the union representing 30,000 faculty and staff at CUNY -- to attend an event that will be of interest to many of our members (see attached file for more details).

The Chinese, Chinese-American, and Asian-American students and workers of our community face more threats and hostility, and the pandemic has only made the situation worse. The US has a long history of anti-Asian and particularly anti-Chinese racism. Politicians and the media reproduce discourses that demonize and dehumanize Chinese people. The increasingly belligerent China-bashing is called by some as “the China Syndrome”.  Join us for this discussion on its origins, current manifestations and reflections on what can be done to oppose new techniques of ‘hybrid war’ that threaten the populations of both countries.

Speakers:

Roxanne Dunbar-Ortiz is the award-winning author of An Indigenous People’s History of the United States and forthcoming Not “A Nation of Immigrants”.

Yan Hairong is a professor of Social Sciences at Hong Kong Polytechnic University and author of New Masters, New Servants: Migration, Development, and Women Workers in China

Carl Zha was born in China, and is the host of the Silk and Steel Podcast with a focus on everything China-related, history, culture, and politics.
